Transfercase rattle on a 99 TJ

Hi there, ok here's the thing. I have a rattle in my transfer case and I know it is common in alot of TJ's so I picked up the small kit to fix the rattle but what I need is some direction in how and where in the transfer case I need to install it. If anybody knows give me a shout. Thanks

Hey warriorprincess and welcome to Jeepz!. I can't help you (Alot of good I am, huh?) but I'm sure someone will be along shortly. There are a great group of folks here that know a ton about jeeps and will surely help you out.

Good luck and stick around.

RE: High speed shake

Did you put a suspension lift on your TJ? If so how much lift?

I'm guessing what you bought is a transfer case lowering kit. It mounts between the frame and the transfer case skid plate.

Here's text from a standard kit's instructions, it should steer you in the right direction:

Support the transfer case skid pan with a foor jack.

1.Remove the three bolts on the passenger side
holding the crossmember to the frame.Install the
spacers between the crossmember and the frame.
Be sure the cupped end is in contact with the
crossmember.
2.Attach the crossmember using the conical washer
and the 1/3 x 3 ” bolt supplied..Tighten bolts.
3.Repeat the above steps for the driver side of the
vehicle.
Note:Some models may experience interfer-
ence between the transfer case and the skid
pan.It will be necessary to trim the pan to
eliminate contact.

RE: High speed shake

I didn't put any suspension lift in (yet!), it's just a common problem with the stock tj's. I have to find the kit and see if there is even a name for it I bought it so long ago but haven't known how to install it.

RE: Touching tribute to the armed forces, and families

My XJ had some vibes. After the lift and TC drop it is gone.

Another solution may be to adjust (shim) your control arms to correct the driveshaft angle. I'm guessing here but it may be a smarter solution (and easier). I hope someone more familiar with the TJ's can clarify that.

I think that what warriorprincess is trying to get across is this: She has a stock TJ and has a kit that is supposed to fix a common problem with rattles in a stock TJ.

Is anyone familiar with this kit or with the TJ rattling problem?

Im not familer with the kit, as my TJ never had the problem (I think it was later TJs than mine) but Ive heard of it. I think its just the shift linkage rattles. Not exactly sure on the details. I think there was a TSB for it.

RE: water in transmission

The dealer will handle it, but since it was a TSB, it was never deemed bad enough or common enough for a recall, so you'd still have to pay. A TSB is simply put out to help the tecs figure out whats goin on.

the kit is probably some bushings or rods to keep things tightly where they need to be

RE: Body lift

I have the rattle also in my '01 and as far as I know it's not to worry about. It only happens when you're sitting in neutral and idling. I've had mine since it was new and it's always sounded the same.

RE: Steering Box Bolt

Wow, I'm so impressed at how much u guys r thinking about this thanks alot! I'm heading home this wknd where the kit is if I can find it (it's been so long) I'll get back to you with the info ASAP. Thanks for all your thought. And u guys are probably right it probably isn't a big deal its just one of those iritating things I'd like to get rid of!

I'll bet that most of us would've gotten rid of any other piece of equipment that causes as much trouble as our Jeeps do. Yet we hang on to them like members of the family.

It's a Jeep thing....You definetly wouldn't understand!

The Best Suspension For Me?

I have a rattle in my '03 TJ X. Mine's automatic and rattles at 45 mph when it shifts into overdrive. Any ideas on this? Everything stock - for now.
