Can i swap out transfer cases in a 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited i have a 249 in it can i swap it for a np231 out of a wrangler and if so what would i need to do the swap

Yes, and it's a common upgrade. Do a web search for 'jeep 249 231 swap' or similar, there's good info out there.

At a minimum you need to swap the input shaft from the 249 into the 231. Good chance your driveshafts and shift linkage will need modified as well.
