Pitman Arm question

I have a 1987 Cherokee with the 4.0 if I do a 3" lift do I need to change the pitman arm?

I didn't do a drop pitman on a comanche with a three inch lift or on a cherokee with a three inch lift. I never had any trouble from not doing it. You have an 87, like my 87 cherokee so you have a high pinion front axle which means you wont run into any angle issues with lifting like newer cherokees can from lits a little taller than 3 inches cause them.

One additional question do I have to go to adjustable control arms?

Not with a 3 inch lift. You can if you want to but you dont have to. The angle of the control arms wont be bad

Yesterday I had a 45 minute conversation with a tech at Quadatec from this, I was told that to do a 3" lift I have to get in this case the rough country sway bar drop kit and I have to change the upper control arms to adjustable, and the track bar also need to be adjustable. I am looking to talk with someone who has experience with this. if anyone knows someone on the site I should talk with, please let me know.

The tech said that the stock setup does not work with anything over a 1.5 lift. I am going to take a look at cost of the two opinions for me who plans to only use the Jeep for trail running and street driving the lift is not needed I was only going to do it based on money which now I am not sure it is the cheaper option.

they are trying to sell you something so they are going to say that. i have run 3 inch lifts on two 87 model jeeps with control arm front ends, the xj and the mj. i have also run 3 inch lifts on two or three zj grand cherokees, which run the exact same front end as the xj and mj jeeps (and the tj wrangler, in case you need parts sometime).

3 inches and lower do not require a drop pitman arm, adjustable control arms, or track bar. you can, if you wish, but its not required at such a small lift

and, if you don't want to do control arms, they also make control arm drop brackets, which lower the mounting points at the frame. some people like them, and some people do not. i have used them and i have used adjustable control arms. i like the brackets more because the ride is a lot smoother, but i am talking on 5 inch lifts, not 3 inch

At this point I think I am going to stick to stock from Quadatec because one Stock is more reliable and two cost but I am still considering so right now I am starting to purchase what is needed to rebuild the steering or front end I have a lot of play and vibration this will get me moving toward the next round of repairs while I am debating. I am not going to be mudding or rockcrawling my use is street and trail so the 3" lift is not needed it has been something I am looking into because I can get the lift in country instead importing and the cost was compatible but now it is not compatible to stock and I plan the run 235/75R15 that are on the Jeep in my profile image either way so unless something new come up I think I am going to stick to stock.

Thank you for sharing
