Lost all your transfer case fluid when the rear shaft was removed, if the transfer case has a slip yoke as the rear output. Probably wore out the chain as well as the bearings.[addsig]

Sounds like the chain is toast. What kind of driving was it going back home? I had to pull the driveshaft once to get home, luckily only 8 miles. Was there any fluid in the t-case or is it completely bone dry? You can take off that back cover pretty easily and look to see if anything is broken towards the back. If you see lots of metal shavings and broken pieces, I would hop on over to E-bay and start lookin for a new one....

I would rather start over than take a risk rebuilding a busted up transfer case. Often you have the same amount in it after you buy all the new parts and take the time to have them put in....[addsig]

Gotta say this, because it´s the second time this month, somebody has drivin home minus a rear drive shaft and yoke, slinging oil the entire way. Stuff about half of an old sock in there, pack it in pretty good around the shaft and it usually lasts a good long while. Used an old newspaper one time, I didin´t want to give up a sock, it worked also. Check it about every three cans of coke (heck you got to stop anyway).

I know this is not of any help but just so you know. I learned something here from your misfortune. I would never have thought of pluging off the rear of the transmission prior to driving home. Sorry you had the problem

but Thanks for posting the info

That is one of the things that makes Jeepz a great hang out. Tug[addsig]

Been there, done that, we all learn from our misfortune and hopefully from other peoples problems and mistakes. Good luck.

I once had to cross level all my fluids, to make it home. A little transmission fluid in the old transfer, then a little motor oil, then a little out of the differential, Made it back, but everybody was a couple of quarts low.

Wow, amazing how the simplest things you don't think of out on the trail huh? Now that I know to do that I will remember and keep it mind. Hopefully I won't have that problem again but you never know....

My mindset is that if you aren't bendin or breaking things, you aren't driving your Jeep to its full potential. Don't get me wrong, its not my goal to break things, but I don't get mad when something breaks, (unless its the 3rd time or something...) but I like to know that I am testing my Jeep and using it for its intended purpose. I can't stand to see PJ's (Pretty Jeeps, Painsy Jeeps, Pu$$y Jeeps ect...) running around our town deprived of their true colors....
