We tried a new trail on Sunday Morning. It is Illinois Gulch and is located in Douglas County, Colorado.
This was a birthday run. Every year Jim invites fellow Jeepers to run a trail in celebration of his birthday. This year it was Illinois Gulch.
We met in Denver and headed south toward the trail. 10 rigs made the trip from Denver and 1 rig met us at the trailhead. It took 3 hours to get there from our meeting place, between a breakdown, food, gas and potty stops.
Once we finally got to the trailhead, everyone started to air down and prepare for the trail.
It is a short trail but rather remarkable. Some steep climbs on loose dirt and skree, some minor obstacles (mostly for posing) and “Moab Hill†made it a lot of fun. I ran the trail and Tom drove the Mighty YJ.
I tried a new camera this time with mixed results. Overall, it did OK but I did get a lot of strange shots of which this is an example –
It was a hot afternoon. Most of the rigs took the tops down to take advantage of the sun and the view.
The trail was dusty. The wind would catch the dust and I am sure that everyone had to clean up when they got home.
There were many climbs.
I didn’t get many pictures of “Moab Hill,†but it was an exciting obstacle. Resembling many of the climbs on slickrock, the hill had easy, medium, tough and very tough lines up the face. This picture is from a friend.
It was a birthday run (after all) and we had a birthday party with cake on the hill after the attempts had ended.
I did get a lot of pictures of rigs doing poses! Here are some of them –
It was a 4-mile trail that was a lot of fun. If you and your rig are in the area, do give it a try!
