Towing capacity of YJ

Hey.... My 95 YJ has the stock 2.5l in it. What was the maxinum towing wieght out of the factory? I do have 4.65 gears in it though... Would that allow me to tow a little more? I have a large utility trailer (1400lbs empty), and when I fill it full of tree branches it gets to almost 2000lbs. I wonder if I am safe towing this 10 miles on non-highway roads (all flat) to the dump. Hmmmm.... and thoughts?????

You got those rare 4.65 gears!! It's amazing to me that you know the weight of your trailer loaded and unloaded but you can't figure out where it says that in the owners manual or on the body sticker.
Doesn't matter anyway. Just run it til something breaks then you'll have your answer. They always under rate them anyway.

you'll be fine with a 2000lb load... hell, a geo can pull 2000lb... and over short distances you'll be fine, may slow down on a good hill but basicall, if it moves while attached to the jeep it can pull it. you dont have to worry about the size of the load too much over short distances and low speed.

I once pulled a 4500lb car on a treiler that had to weigh 1800lb behind my truck.. it was rated at 4000lb max. handled it fine, a little sluggish but it handled it.

Yeah, you're fine. Just don't try to beat the honda next to you at the stoplight. And give plenty of room for breaking.

Thanks for the constructive comments. Next time I will be sure to proofread my post to reflect proper gears. I'll also make sure I document that I am in need of a manual so I was not able to look for the info myself. I am sure manual would tell me the info I am looking for.

What a bunch of smart asses we have here. Shame on you.....

We tried to tell folks Red doesn't play well with others.
Heheeeeeeeee

I bet you will find 2k is quite a load on that Jeep. It will pull it just be damn sure of your tounge weight, and you now weight the same as your trailer. If it has brakes your probably fine. I had a friend that hauled his 28" Bayliner cierra (flybridge) with his CJ 7 auto Nuts,......yup but he did it year after year.

2000 should be fine. I hauled a big ass U-haul trailer that was a bit over 2000 clear across the country with no worries. It certainly wasn't a Cannonball Run effort but we got there. That was with my previous '89 Islander...Sky blue, man I miss her!

Cheers,
Geoff

What kinda car weighs 4500 ?
I have a 72 Buick thats not that heavy .........
Now I just towed it on a equipment trailor weighing 1800..
It took everything my truck had to pull it up hill.
Truck does not have much with a 4.3 ..........

i towed a 3k plus camaro up a couple mile hill, starting on the hill one time... the clutch didn't like starting out.. but we got it

the most inportant thing is that you do not go over the "tongue weight" I know I read on this board where someone hooked their wrangler up to a mobile home and snatched the front wheels off the ground.

Well, according to the UHaul computer, they do not allow Wranglers to rent their trailers. Aparently our Jeeps cannot tow their trilers safely enough. I still got away with it with a small shop that has the Uhauls available. The guy said it was a bunch of Uhaul BS. So, if you reserve a trailer online, tell them you are using a big chevy, and they won't bug you. -al

I pulled a small uhaul trailer with my 'ol '88 YJ 258 from Seattle to St. Louis, had that trailer loaded to the gills. Even put the back seat in the trailer so I'd have room to sleep, wasn't bad considering the -5* at the rest area in Wyoming. The semis were passing me going uphill, but other than that it wasn't bad. Gotta love 3.07 gears.

Keep it under 250lb tongue/2500 trailer and you should be fine. Heavier loads are okay for very short distances, if heavy braking isn't a concern.

How about any sedan from the 70's!
UHaul is full of it anyway. They wouldn't let me put a 99 Silverado on one of their aluminum trailers and pull it behind one of their big moving trucks. A 2WD silverado doesn't weigh all that much.

With the condition of the UHaul trailers i've seen around here there isn't a vehilce in the world that could pull them safely :D

probably not... but i bet it is over the load rating they put on their trailers ( i believe they rate them at 3500lb load max). they under rate everything.. hell, you're not supposed to tow them over 45mph.. all i can say, if they can't be towed over 45mph they are unsafe to have on the road....
