To lock or not to lock

RE: TFI and Emissions

True, the 8.25 is limited to 4.56 gears, how do they work for you on your 33's Mingez?

The Ford 8.8 would be good up to 5:13, the D44 5:89

Your D30 front: 5:38

Good time for a rubicon run?

GREAT! At first I wished I could have gone to 4.88. I have aluminum wheels, and along with the lockers, it's unstoppable. But I'd like to drive it on the freeway and IMO 4.88's would have kept me from driving it up to the Pecos wilderness this weekend. So, I'm happy with them. I think it could use a bit more gear if I had steel wheels and full tread on my procomp Xterrains.

With my 32's and aluminum wheels, the things a monster.

K & N cone, airtube, TBS, and flowmaster and the Lockers make it just perfect with the 33's.
I really think performance-wise, I'm done for a while. In the future, a selectable in the front, racks, flares, winch, armor, blah blah etc etc.

That might be a little risky  . I wonder how long it would last with gears that low in it

It all sounds a little risky to me. All of the axles being discussed are too lightweight to run gears lower than 4.56:1 if you have any power under the hood and tires big enough to get good traction. Those small gearsets are getting pretty weak at that point and the shafts aren't really up to the task either. A D30 with really deep gearing might last forever with a four popper and little tires, but a healthy six and some fat meats will make it go pop real quick.

If my diffs don't have any tags, how do I know for sure what the ratio is without pulling the covers and doing the math? I know about jackstands and turning the driveshaft, that will get you close, but I assume you have to be exactly the same in front and back or something will blow plumb up!!!!

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: New wrenching injury!

Lowest for the D30 is 4.88, so that limits your rear axle if you keep the D30. The pinion is pretty small on 4.88's for a D30, I wouldn't want any lower on the axle if they even made them.

5.38 in my D44's for me, but I've got a 4banger that likes to rev so it won't be a problem for me.

I put the rear on jack-stands and marked the shaft and the rear tire. A buddy turned the rear tire one full rotation while I counted the shaft turns. The shaft made just a little over 3 1/2 turns?
I'm confused as a baby in a topless bar!

If it turned 3 1/2 times, it's likely 3.54, or whatever Jeep ratio is close to that.

It would be obvious if it was 3.73, as the shaft would have turned 3 and 3/4 of a turn.

That is kinda what I was leaning towards.. a 355

The front has to be the same as the back, so I think I will pull the front diff and know for sure before I start hunting an upgrade.

Yeah counting teeth works everywhere except Kentucky!

The ratio, should also be stamped on the ring gear.

I know you've made up your mind about going with a D44 or other upgraded axle, but to due away with some misconceptions. A locked D35 is decent with 35" tires, as long as you drive with common sense. I have a close friend that has lockrights front and rear, 30/35 combo with 35's for 2-3 years now. He does some pretty impressive things in her Jeep. This past weekend he broke his first rear axle shaft. And around here, spare parts for D35's and 30's is pretty cheap, so it's not that big of a deal. It also depends on what kind of wheeling you do. My friend does moderate to heavy wheeling, mostly rock crawling. If you mostly run trails and some rocks every now and then, you'd be okay.
