TJ Smashed Windshield Replacement/Is it doable "shade-t

So some A-hole smashes my windshield today while the Jeep is parked at the park. Have any of you guys replaced your windshields yourselves? Was it difficult? How much for a windshield? Any info appreciated.....ferg

Sorry I am of no help but I wouldn't think it would be that much, after all it is just a flap piece of glass.

Does you issurance offer free replacments under your comprehensive coverage?

I would get it done professionally, I am not sure if you can buy just glass some where.

also If you pay to have it done, they will warrenty the work.
Should be in the area of $150 for a jeep

I worked at a glass shop before and its pretty easy ...

1)all you do is get some LAMINATE glass and cut to match
2)take the moulding put it on the new glass... put some rope inside the groove where it is supposed to fit the windshield frame
3)put the glass on the outside of the frame like you are trying to push it in. you may have to stick the corner where your rope should hang out in first
4) then pull the rope from inside the jeep ....start with one end and slowly pull around the windshield....the lip of the moulding should catch inside as you pull the rope ... I would spray some oil around it to make it slide better...I hope this helps and saves you some money ..

I know we used to charge the same price as a JEEP windshield when all we did was cut the glass ourselves... FLEECING OF JEEP DUDES .. im sorry it was before I had one

The only WARRANTY youll get is on leaks .. nothing else

oh yeah...sand the edges with a palm sander after you cut the glass... high grit to just round it off with no sharp edges.... then just rub oil on the edge and make it look like a professional job.. it will be easier on the moulding...

you could get them to cut it as a piece of glass with your pattern instead of them charging you for a windshield .. then you put it in with a buddy to put pressure on the outside as you pull the rope ...

it sounds hard but its the easiest and fastest windshield to replace ....

From a non-professional installer....

I've installed one windshield on a 55 chevy pick-up. It's tough but doable. Don't forget to leave a little bit of the rope hanging out of the groove! LOL. It took me a while, and I had to sweet talk the windshield a bit. (read cussed like a mad man). But I did it. I'm thinking a jeep would be much easier due to the winshield being straight.

Thanks for all the replies...given the number of views, it looks like a lot of guys are interested in windshield replacements. I did get some quotes for those guys interested.....the glasss can be purchased pre-cut for $111 from Johns Auto Parts in Blaine, MN. The gasket is 38 bucks and the guys at Johns said you MUST use a new gasket. If Johns installs it, it will cost $311...seems like a lot for a one hour replacement. The cheapest place to get it done is in Memphis TN for 180 bucks, total cost...I'm too far away for that discount.

ONE LAST THING, DO THE AUTO-GLASS GUYS OUT THERE KNOW IF I SHOULD USE SEALANT WITH THE GASKET?

300 dollars sounds like way too much. i had mine done a while ago for a round 175 dollars and they came to my house and did it in my driveway.

Your Insurance should pay for it. In Florida there it cost nothing. You can get a new windowshield every year. Plus you can get a free box of stakes when they replace it.

never replaced one in a jeep, but around here there are shops that will come to you and install. i've never paid more than $200 installed.

My current windshield looks like it was put in with a lot of silicone/sealant. How does this compare to the gasket/rope method?

You have to use the rope to coerse the seal lip over the lip of the windshield frame. You can use silicone as a lubricant to assist the rope and gasket, but I wouldn't use the "caulk" style sealer.

If any of you guys know someone in Minnesota that will do it for 175 let me know....up here, windshields take a lot of abuse in the winter due to gravel and rocks on the road....from frost heaves and sand-gravel/salt spreading. The windshield market is a rip-off and for a while, some glass shops were charging about 600 bucks for a windshield (if you had insurance). It's gotten better (due to a revolt by the insurance companies), but I believe the rates are still high when compared to warmer climates/states. Insurance covergae varies and a lot of folks have 100 dollar deductables.

I'LL REPLACE IT MYSELF...I JUST NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT SIZE ROPE TO USE...AND HOW TO MAKE SURE THE ROPE DOESN'T SLIP OUT OF THE CHANNEL WHEN ITS PULLED. I'M ALSO NOT SURE WHAT THE BEST WAY IS TO GET THE OLD WINDSHIELD OUT...I'LL PROBABLY CUT THE SEAL.

just push the old widshield out ..you can vacuum up any glass later ... then pull the moulding off without having to worry about cutting anything....but
