TJ bushings confusion

Hey, long time no post. Sorry, I've been helluva busy with work, etc. Looks like the site is doing well. I promise I'll try to be more regular now. Especially since I have a job and some project money... :D

Problem: I need to change out the bushings and shocks on my TJ. The names for all the parts differ between the catalogs (Quadratec, 4wdHW, etc), and the shop manuals. And sho nuff, no one seems to want to paint a pretty diagram with labels of what all the parts are.

Question: Where do I find good, full diagram of a TJ suspension with the names that the prothane bushing mfr uses? The diagrams at prothane are too small, I can't tell where they are. :?

That is about all the bushings on the front end, are you ordering prothane?
 
It would seem so, they appear to be the only supplier out there.

I know the upright bars going to the track bar (C-shaped, mounted across the frame?) tap against the track bar when making tight turns slow. The bushings are definitely bad there. So I figured I'd replace them all while I had it apart.

Also, I was going to try out POR15 as it's beginning to get surface rust. I want to do fully disassembly for that.
 
Let's make sure we are talking about the right thing.

The C shapped Bar that goes accross your Frame is the Anti-Sway bar. And the Vertical bars are your Sway-bar End-links. What you want are the Boots that cover the joint that is at the top of End-links. I am pretty sure it is just a boot. Tell you what give me a few ays and I will cut my old End-links open and find out if it is or not.

I would suggest going ahead and getting some Disconnects. Why Restore when you can Up-grade.

Restoring rymes with Boring ;)
 

Why restore as opposed to upgrade?

In a word, stop-gap.

This is my daily driver and the shocks and bushings are shot (as well as the joint you mentioned). I want to add a lift, new tires, etc. But I'd like to hold off until it's no longer my daily driver (3-6mo). Since I drive 35 miles each way to work, around the DC beltway, at ~75mph (downhill :D ), I can't let it go till I'm ready to buy a new vehicle (when I would have time to leave the jeep out of commission during lift install).

I imagine disconnects are particular to the amount of lift you have, so putting them on now, when I'll be lifting in 3-6 months, doesn't make sense. Otherwise, I agree with you entirely...

So to sum up:

Anti-Sway Bar to
Anti-Sway Bar End-Links. Then
Upper & Lower Control Arms with a
Track Bar thrown in the middle cross-wise.

Does the rear have the same names? It looks like it was the Anti-Sway Bar that threw me for a loop...

If this wasn't my daily driver, you could d*mn well bet I wouldn't be talking restoration... :twisted:

If you are going with only a 2" lift you are set with new Disconnects. If you plan on going higher then you have the Issue. The JKS I have are for 0"-2" lift. If you are going higher then of course hold off. Unfortunantly, Shock partnumbers are different for a lifted TJ. I have already promised mine out and I tore the heck out of my Endlink's bushings when removing them. Otherwise I would offer you mine Old stuff for the shipping price. I can let you know Next Sunday. These are factory and only have 11K on them. IF my friend can't use them you are welcome to them.

Let's lay these things out for your TJ starting at the Steering box.
Pitman Arm to the Drag-link.
Drag-link connects to the passenger side.
The Tie-Rod connects about 4-6 inches from the end of the Drag-link and goes to the Driver side.
The Trac-bar Connects to a Bracket that is connected to the Passenger side of the Axle then extends up to the Frame.
The Swaybar is a long U shapped Bar that lays across the Top of the frame just in front of the Grille and under the Plastic Jeep cover.
Swaybar endlinks connect to the Swaybar then vertically to the Axle.
The Control arms Come from the Frame to the back of the Axle.

This is how I understand it.
Any Corrections????
