The good news: A few years ago I parted out a 74 IH Travelall to get the drivetrain from it, which is an AMC 401 V8, Torqueflight 727, and a Dana 60 semi-float rear. The engine had sat in the truck without a carb on it since the eighties(estimate by me and the original owners family), but the hood was closed and the air filter housing was sitting over the intake... then I cut the truck apart and the engine sat under a tarp behind the shop here ever since. I was thinking the block was probably rusted really bad and possibly junk, but this afternoon I had a little time to kill so I yanked the intake, front accessories, and the heads... and the cylinders are great looking!! I have one little line of rust in two cylinders that looks like it would clean up with a good honing. Awesome.
The bad news: Now my CJ is going to get it's little fire breathing 304 pulled and I'm robbing all of the goodies, including the race prepped 360 heads, and throwing it all on this thing after it gets a .030 over bore and some new forged pistons. The CJ will get a stock 360 that I have. Bad day for the CJ... VERY VERY good day for some little Gremlin, Spirit, or Javelin that I plan to buy after the first of the year.
