that mud hole was just a littttttle too deep...

i havent been around in a while, friends. i got a rustys 4.5" lift with quick disconnects from a friend who got hit my a cement truck at low speeds for only $200. everything aftermarket was in perfect condition. got some black rock crawler rims, blah blah.

well, i went swimming at the local rope swing the other day, just as i normally do at least once/twice a week... but this time, they had started clearing out some land by the river, and a front end loader/backhoe/something huge had went down the trail that leads to it and rutted it up pretty bad. i normally havent had a single problem getting down to the swing, but this time the ruts were so messed up and "every whicha-way".... it cocked me sideways and i went shooting into the deep end that hadnt been there before.

the jeep immediately cut off, and i feared the worst. i had some extremely good friends come help me get out, and dolly'd it back to my house. i took out the spark plugs, unplugged the ign. wire from the coil, turned her over for a second to try and spray any water out, added a tiny bit of oil to lube incase it had got water in there, cleaned off the plugs, replaced them, drained the oil, turned it for a second, flushed it with 2qts... just letting it run through. it wasnt milky or anything when it drained. replaced the air filter, filled her up with oil, and she fired up. she ran like absolute crap for a while and would cut off if i let off the gas. after a few mins she idled by herself.

after taking the first drive, the transmission will change into all gears (reverse, n etc) just fine, but when i have it in drive and im going down the road, it wont shift into 2nd gear when needed. i kept stopping and trying over and after about 20 mins of doing so it finally shifted once, and it was fine until i got to my friends. on the way home, same thing. i went probably 8 miles at 15mph trying to get it to switch. after it did, i was okay again. when i came to lights and had to stop after that, it shifted like normal when accelerating again. it idles like crap too. kinda knockey, but not to the point where im worried.

what steps should i take? is it just water in the transmission? new filter, flush, fluid? or does this sound like something a little worse?

the rough running part sounds like water in your cap, pull your dist. cap and dry it out remove the roter and check for water there also, prob just a little condensation. for the trany check the sensor on the transmission, sounds like it may have water in the connection also keeping it from shifting. Had my sensor go out on my transmission causing it to do the same.

changed the fluid. no luck. i guess ill try the sensor next. if i just take it out and blow it with an air compressor, is that enough? would the water burn it out/ruin it? should i just go get a replacement?

i wold just blow the connections out, then get some die-electric grease (is a clear silicon grease) and put in the electrical connections on the transmission will keep water out from now on.

where is the speed sensor located on the transmission? i looked around and see a plug on the drivers side towards the front, but it doesnt look like the oem replacements ive seen at advance. which one do i need? both show up for replacements parts. the first one is 130 bucks, the second is 36. i'd rather have the cheaper one, but will it work?

You need to change ALL of your fluids. Diffs, transmission, transfer case, engine oil (I know already done but I posted for info), then lube anything that can be. Your wheel bearings are probably sealed but if not they should be re-packed.

This should be done every time you get the Jeep into deep water or really wet mud.

As for the cap and rotor, I think you have a distributorless ignition like I had on my 2000 XJ????

ah, twisted copper, is that the new ride??? looks nice. it took me a min to realize who you were, i didnt look at the name at first.

yeah today i went ahead and changed my spark plugs since i put oil in there, i knew it must have fouled them up a bit. ive changed everything except my diff. and transfer case fluids...that's next. i also took my air hose and air'd the sh** out of all the connections

after doing all this, i took it about a mile down the road and back. the first crank was a lot smoother, idled better, and it didnt cut off on me. she shifted fine at first, but after i turned around she waited a little late to shift...but hell.....she shifted.....

i'm still curious as to which sensor i need? im going to replace it anyhow.

I would wait on changing it, there are 2 and Input one and Output on the Input is driverside right above the oil pan, the OUtpus is on the end that goes into the transfercase. take the electrical connections loose, blow them out and put the Die electric grease (can get the die electric grease any autoparts store) in them then reconnect use the die electric grease any were u have wires connectiong, spart plug connections everything, I have it in my distribure less wire connection and all. it keeps water from causing probs even if you get into another deep water hole. try that first then try replacement.

laph, thank you very, very much for that

tc- 99 must have been the last year xj's had distributors. my friend with a 2k xj doesnt have one, mine does though.

running a little better, switching gears now from blowing it out. i did an obd-ii test, came back with 3 throttle positioning sensor errors, which is in the throttle body.... im sure it got wet too... and the transmission speed sensor input error showed, as well as an auxiliary emissions controls error.

duh, i forgot, i shoulda said something about the o2 sensors, they should also be done :) that is going to be the rough idle. Did you clear the errors? then check again.

How many qts did you flush out the transmission with? Draining it will not do the trick. You need to disconect the input to the transmission from the cooler and dump about 12 qts through it while in gear so the pump is working.
