Tank Capacity

Are there different sized gas tanks for the TJ? My gas light comes on after I've only burned 11 gallons, and it always seem like the first half of my tank burns much faster than the second. Does anyone know standard capacity for a 97 TJ 2.5L?

it should say in your owner's manual. mine is 18 or 20, don't remember exactly

It's a 15 gallon

Thanks, does anyone else have the issue of the gas light coming in when I should have 4 gallons left?

It comes on as a warning to let u know u are almost out. If I didnt come on u would just run out and never know it

You can bump the capacity up to 18 or 19gal by reaching in through the sending unit hole and trimming the fill tube from the inside. The 2.5L TJ came with a fill tube that extends down further into the tank to limit capacity.

The '91+ 2.5L YJ owners can go from 15gal to 20gal by trimming the fill tube from outside the tank without dropping it. TJ owners have to drop the tank and remove the sending unit.

Just curious, but I would think the 2.5L would have an adverse reaction to the extra weight of the fuel being underpowered already - or does the extra weight not amount to enough to be a concern?

You are only talking about adding about 32 pounds.

1 gallon of gas = aprox.6.3 Lbs

I haven't done the mod yet, but the idea of going 300 miles on a tank of gas instead of 240 sounds good. I just have to remember to do it sometime when my tank is about empty.

On average I get about 16 MPG.I get about 220 miles on a tank before i refill.I have never pushed it to see the max distance I can go.
