Subway footlongs are only 11 inches

It would appear that Subway "footlong" subs are only 11 inches, and the public outcry is something to behold. People have taken to uploading photos of 11 inch subs to Subway's official facebook page, and there's currently 3 separate law suits in the US that are seeking class action status.

The law suits are pretty lame, but the photos on Subway's facebook page are pretty funny

As much as I dislike Subway I have to chime in here. I used to own/manage a sub shop in Charleston, SC called Lenny's Sub Shop. We, and Subway I presume, start with frozen bread sticks about a third the length of what they end up. You put them on a tray and put them in the proofer for about an hour. This is a large box with low heat and moisture that makes the bread soften up and rise a little. Out of the proofer you then stretch the bread to just under the desired length. I would keep about two fingers space on each side of the tray and end up at 15" after it rose more in the oven. Yes, Lenny's large is 15" and much better. :D

So, I understand that it is difficult to get it exactly 12". I was pretty consistent getting ours to 15" most every time but there is no way to get 100%. Especially when you have high turnover and you get new people proofing/stretching the bread all the time.

The ridiculous part of these lawsuits is that you are getting the exact same amount of bread, meat and vegetables etc whether the bread is 11, 12 or 13" . You follow a formula for each sandwich. We went by weight - larges were 1lb when weighed with just the meat, cheese and bottom of the bread no matter if the bread was 14 15 or 16 inches. It doesn't matter! Subway I think doesn't cut their own meat so I think they go by number of slices but you are getting the same sandwich no matter how long the bread ends up. I could use the same bread to make loaves 10" or 20" but it's the same amount of bread. The longer it is the less dense but still the same quantity of bread.

People are crazy for suing.
 
They do use frozen sticks....

My dad manages 10 plus subways and I will not even eat there when I get the subs for free. They just do not put enough meat on their subs. I put more meeting a put on a 12 inch sub on 2 pieces of bread lol

Our regular sized sub was half of the 15" large. One day we bought a "footlong" sub from subway just meat and cheese and weighed it. Their large sub weighed LESS than our regular sized sub. They really screw you on the meat.

Yup I prefer to go to a little mom and pop shop and get my subs it seems they actually take care of you because they want your business again
 
I like subway. Went in and asked for a $4.59 eleven inch and they just looked at me funny.
