Stuck in 4wd and shifter wont budge

Hi, my girlfriends jeep (97 grand cherokee) is stuck in 4wd and the shifter will not move. I've tried it in neutral, going in reverse, going forward, and going around a corner...but the shifter wont even move off of 4wd.
I took a quick look underneath and it looked like the linkage was hooked up, but I thought I'd ask for some advice before I froze my butt off somemore.
thanks.

and the problem is what exactly?

I run my XJ in full time 4wd all the time. no problems with it at all, although I do have the selec trac transfer case if that has any bearing on the 'problem'

Which transfer case does she have (small metal tag on rear of transfer case has model number). If not sure, just list what range options it has.

If it's a model with full-time 4wd it may require driving a short distance in reverse, or a few figure 8's in reverse and then try shifting.

I believe it has 2wd, part time 4wd, full time 4wd and 4Lo. But I'll check again. Its funny, I went out to move the vehicle this morning and got the shifter to move forward, it was stiff but it moved. I left it in part time 4wd, just incase it doesn't want to move anymore and she needs 4wd.
The other day it was stuck like a rock, I was driving up and down our street, forwards and reverse, cranking it back and forth and it wouldn't move at all. Strange.
thanks for the help, keep the suggestions coming.
