i got some belt dressing and sprayed it on the big belt in front of the block (fan belt? sorry, still pretty knew at this) but its still making this noise in 1 2 and 3rd gear. are there more belts that i need to hit? the noise is n through 3rd, but only when im on the gas. when i let the petal up or shift to 4th it goes away. it sounds kind of like (bare with me here) remember in dumb and dumber when Jim Carry said "want to hear the most annoying noise in the world...EEEEAAAAAAAA anyway, thats what it makes, its not loud; i have to turn the sterio down to hear it, sounds kinda like an air raid siren or something. How am i doing w/ describing? well, it pisses me off and id ilke to do something constructive about it. can u tell im pissed? well thanx for the help

If you tried belt dressing and it didn't work I would say it is time to replace the belts. If that doesn't solve it, it could be a bearing in the alternator of waterpump or somewhere else up there. Hope this helps ya. Evan[addsig]

I've had the same problem. That belt dressing doesn't really work that well, I tried it. When mine started going the first time, I swore it was the power steering pump going so I replaced it and found after it was just the belt. It sounds like metal to metal squealing. Since then, I've gone through a belt a year.[addsig]

Like everyone else says, it sounds like the belt is gone. Also, be sure to clean all the pulleys. Sounds crazy, but if the belt was slipping it probably left a film on some of the pulleys. Just take a good stiff nylon brush to scrub off as much of the goop, that's on the pulleys, as possible.[addsig]

You can absolutely do it yourself. But if you've never done it before, find a friend that has. You'll have to loosen something, most likely the alternator or air conditioner if you have one. You should also have a sticker under the hood that shows you how to run the belt around the pulleys. If not you better have a great memory or a digital camera.[addsig]
