Steering gear box seals

Greetings, Jeep fans,
1988 Cherokee 4x4, power steering, is leaking from (it appears) the input shaft of the gear box. I would guess there's a seal in there; how tough is it to replace that thing? It looks like the hoses are dry and no leakage from down below. Will appreciate any help available.

The easiest way is to remove the gear box off the Jeep and rebuild it on the bench. Napa or Carquest should be able to get the complete seal kit for your steering gear box. Make sure you mark and take note on the input shaft retainer position for re-assembly.

Thank you, Steelheadz ! After rebuilding my '39 Chevy gear-box it can't be too bad. I did hear that Lucas leak-stop was an option to try first. The diagram is great; thanks, again.

For me it's easier to replace the steering box, and upgrade while you're at it. A '99 Durango 4wd steering box works well.

Say, Bounty Hunter,
Can you tell me a bit more about the 99 Durango gear-box swap ? Is it pretty much a bolt-on or does it require a bunch of modifyin' ?
Thanx,

Bounty Hunter and carnuck: Thank you guys - priceless !
