Starter Relay

What color wires go to the relay?? The relay is marked F, SOL, I and G.

I'm have a problem with starting my 89 4.0L Jeep, I go to start it and nothing I have power to every thing else but the starter does not engage. I keep trying then all of a sudden it starts working? I replaced the relay and I want to make sure I got the wires on correctly. I also had the starter checked and it's fine.

Thanks.

1. orange

2. green (to starter solenoid)

3. black with white stripe/ 4. green

Relay as seen from passengers seat.

The relay is marked F, SOL, I and G.

Most likely stands for:

F = Fused Hot (always hot lead from the battery that is fused.)

SOL = Solenoid (Wire connecting starter relay to starter solenoid coil.)

I = Ignition (connects to the output of the ignition switch which is hot in the START position.)

G = Ground (wire to chassis ground.)

Hope that helps

The Matrix Revolution...

Don´t want to steer you wrong. My 88 has four bayonet type plugs, the markings are long worn off. And one major nut type, junction for the large Red wires, main power connection.
The top left as your sitting in the passengers seat, is the orange with black stripe, goes to the fuel pump. Possibly marked BAL (for fuel pump ballast resistor). Or maybe F for fuel pump.
The next on the left (middle) is the larger green wire, that goes to the starter solenoid, probably marked SOL.
The bottom left side is, black with a white strip that goes either to the neutral safty switch or ground depending on transmission type. Probably marked G.
The bottom right is the smaller green wire, from the ignition. Probably marked I.
The large nut/lug, red wires, is probably marked BATT.

Your 89 my be different.

Starters often fail to work, when the brushes make iffy contact. The starter can test OK and still have weak brush springs. The brushes sometimes make contact and sometimes don´t. If the relay doesn´t get the job done, the next time the starter doesn´t work, give it a healthy wack with a hammer on the end, if it then works, its time for brushes.

The TPS, seems to often cause problems and needs to be periodically tested. The ground for the TPS is also said to be a trouble point (many early XJ owners, have added an extra ground wire here).
Dirty idle speed stepper motor (dirty throttle body) and loose intake manifold bolts (vacume leak) have also been said, to cause this problem.
My 88 typically idles up a hundred RPM (above normal) at start up, 200 hundred if I have the heater controls in the defrost position, which turns on the air conditioner pump, as a heater to help with defrost.
Mine will sometimes (rarley) idle up to a thousand or so, at start up, I´m pretty sure I need a new intake manifold gasket.

Speaking of grounds, cleaning the motor to firewall ground (drivers side)(added some star washers to guarantee good contact) and the battery to motor ground (by the dipstick brace) really took care of many intermittant problems with my 88 and added considerable HP. I also installed an extra ground from the battery to the top radiator mount/cross memeber/front clip, that also seemed to help (sure made my headlights brighter).

Well I found a bad ground wire, the main one from the battery to the block.
The plastic is hard and falling and the wires are discolerd right by the block. So I get to replace that.

Thanks for the help.
