Starter grinding

I have a 1982 cj7 with a 258 engine. It came out wih the t-4. Someone later installed a t-5 transmission in it. Well I installed a t-150 3 speed and bellhousing in the Jeep. Everthing was good for a while but then the starter started slipping on the flywheel. I removed engine and installed a new flywheel ring gear and a new starter, but the same problem remains, What is the deal?

Welcome to Jeepz. Is the bell housing from the t-5 identical with the t-150 exept for the trans. mounting holes on the bell housing?. Either the starter mount is too far or too close to the flywheel to where the ring gear and the starter gear is not engaging properly. Also, compare the starter gear from the old one and see if the new one you got is different.

Sounds like you might need to properly shim the starter. I am not sure about changes in starters for different transmission bell housings but if you used a 76-79 bell housing for the T150 then a starter for those years should be good.
