Stalling on deceleration

I did on search on this and didn't find anything.
My friend's got a 1980 jeep with an inline six, and a double barrell Carter carb. It will sit there and idle just fine, but it is constantly stalling if you don't give it gas as you decelerate. We've put in a new air filter, PCV valve, spark plugs, and fuel filter. He replaced the gaskets in the carb recently, and we can't find any vacume leaks (but we're not sure about this). Any ideas? Thanks,
Jared

I would suspect a vacuum leak. I would check for a leak again. Try using carb cleaner. While the Jeep is idling spray individual vacuum connections and vacuum lines. When the idle changes you have found your leak. Good luck.

You can also check with a propane torch, unlit of course, valve open and moving over all vacuum lines and connections. Move over the carb mount as well. Don't get it near the carb opening. RPMs will increase when you find the leak.

Thanks for the quick responses. The propane method sounds like a lot more fun. What about just a soapy water soltion, like you'd use to detect a gas leak? Think would only work for gasses coming out?

I had a similar problem with my Carter, but it was along with a bad idle. I rebuilt the carb and it is better now.

the soap method is is for a gas leak not a vacuum leak...soap bubbles as the gas is blow outwards...the best way is the propane method

i had the same problem in my 89 jeep with the 4.2, i had to drive with "three" feet, i rebuilt the carb and the problem dissapeared, i also noticed there was some junk in the bowl of the carb and i would prolly have to say that is what caused the problem

I also had a problem like that with mine. Would not idle had to keep one foot on the brake other on gas when stopped, and downshifting had to keep foot on gas. Wound up being the carb as well. Finally I replaced it after rebuilding, soaking etc.....
