Spring Over Questions?

I am considering doing a spring over on my 95 YJ. A buddy says he has done several on jeeps and the a fairly easy. My question is about driveshafts. Do you have to buy new ones or can you have your others lengthend. Do you have to have a slip yoke eliminator or can you get a longer yoke? My friend says he can rebuild the axles to work, is it possible? I dont wheel it really hard if that make a difference. thanks

you may be able to get buy with making the driveshaft 1-1.5" longer and carefully grinding the yoke out. A T-case drop is also needed. After that you will need to work on wheelin it harder :)

I have heard of people just using the stock output shaft and driveshaft with an SOA, but if you get no vibes, consider yourself lucky... or just that good. The ideal set up (which you probably know) is the SYE paired with a CVshaft in the rear, then you have no need for a Tcase drop and it is ready for on or offroad use. I went with the sye and cv when I did my SOA but I also got the front shaft lenthend like you mentioned. It wasn't that much money at a local shaft shop. I assume you could get the rear lengthened too but you still only have one set of Ujoints insead of the Double Cardan shaft.

we did successfully do the SOA without modifying the driveshaft... but... it will never happen on a 6 cyl... only in a 4 cyl can you do that.. the 4cyl drivetrain is about 2 inches shorter, and allows for better angles... you can use stock axles... many do... we did

how did you do it. did you have to modify them in any way?

NO, there is anough spline left over in the slip yoke to allow the drive shaft to pull out a little, buy if you wheel that thing a little too hard, you will bust it up. I have seen main out put shafts snap! slip yokes strip and split, I have seen more than 20 pinion yoke u-joints give out with is not a fun fix (ex. PAP in october, stinky's YJ) I my self went through two pinion yokes and 4 sets of ujoints on a 94 YJ with 4.5 inches of lift and a T-case drop all in about 7 months (I also wheel a little harder than others) I installed a SYE and all has been good since then!

adding to what jps said... the 4 cyl we used didn't have nearly enough torque to bust the drivetrain... yet

cool thanks for the help. now if i can just find someone to help me do it. I am to cheap to go to a local shop, and I dont have easy access to a welder!
