ok guys, been shopping around im getting a set of gears for the fgront and rear, with master install kits and 2 diff covers.... now i dont really want to spent the money on a new carrier, and put in a little linch box locker in the front end, i was thinking about putting a spool in it, its only about 100 bucks and it will be cheaper than buying a carrier then a locker.my total cost for the gear kits and spool will about 600 bucks, which i dont think is bad at all... what does everyone think? whould i go with this set up or spent a little more and put an EZ locker in the front??? also i have lock out hubs so they will be unlocked when im on the road......thanks for everyons feed back....., Ken

dont use a spool up front unless you only want to drive in a striaght line. go with some sort of racheting locker.

E-Z Locker

I wouldn't even put a spool in the rear if you spend any significant time on the street.

Spools are for the rear end of dragsters and dedicated trail rigs.

The back tires would be screeching around corners on the pavement with a spool.

bounty has his rear spooled (welded) and never ever has a problem at all.... ol' BBJ is spooled too, he claimed it was something "you have to get used to" but not a bad thing

If you have manual hubs on the front axle you shouldn't have problems on the road (as long as they are unlocked) since the axles would just be spinning independently of the wheels.

People run spools up front all the time, and as long as you unlock the hubs on the street its fine, but when you do lock em in steering will be very difficult.

Ok, it would work in the front, but I think you'd regret it the first time you go back and forth from street to trail and have to keep jumping in and out of your jeep. I would have hated it yesterday when we had packed snow and ice on all the side roads and ramps but the highways were clear.

As far as the rear end being spooled, as I said, the tires would wear out quicker and screech around sharp turns.

If it is a daily driver, I would not spool either end. It would be a pain in the a$$. If you just drive it back and forth to the trail, it it would be alot more bearable.

hmmmm tru about jumping in and out to lock and unlock between train and street...... maybe i am better off getting a lunch box locker for the front... thanks for everyons opinion

I'm basically spooled front and rear, and drive it on the street often. I wouldn't have it any other way, it's worth the added traction.

Definately spool the front, there are no downsides on the road. The ONLY downside on the trail is that it makes the tightest turns a bit harder, requiring a 5-point turn where you'd normally do a 3-point turn, etc. Unlocking 1 hub will eliminate this when it rarely occurs, but what's a passenger for anyways

I can only unlock one side of my axle for street use, so the driver's side shaft spins the front driveshaft constantly. Not a problem.

Sure my rear spool chirps the tires a little on tight turns on pavement, but that just tells those in the know what is lurking beneath the beast  And it gets very strange looks from those not in the know  The extra tire wear is minimal, and minimized with proper rotation habits.

A buddy of mine bought a YJ and did the same things to the axles a week later, after seeing how well mine performs. Climbs like a billy goat 8) I'm sure BBJ is glad he did it.

Go with the mini-spool if this is for a D44, it's plenty strong, cheaper, and easier to install (unless you have to setup the gears anyway).

yea ill have to set up gears so i was thinking of the mini spool but i also was thinking that i might go with the eZ locker for driving in the rain and snow here in NY, i dont want to have to get out and constantly lock and unlock the hubs
