speedometer trouble

First for clarity here let me state that this happened shortly after a rain storm so water damage could have been the cause. I own a 95 yj 2.5 and last week my speedometer started going haywire and bouncing from 0-35to15-60 etc while holding a constant speed around 25mph.After I had parked the vehicle it stopped for about 5 days as I checked it periodically.Today while driving about 60MPH It started again and quit working altogether.I also noticed a check engine light on. The light went out when I turned off the car and did not come on after I restarted it.I took another trip out for the wife and it started working again.
My Question is this; Does this year vehicle have an actual speedo cable or is it an electrical input that possibly signals the tack and speedo? all my other guages including the tach are working perfectly and I can not see a speedo cable anywhere.
all advise cheerfully recieved!
Thanks

It's an electronic speedo, the sending unit is on the tailhousing of the transfer case. Sounds like the sending unit is bad, they're available at most parts stores.

Thanks Bounty! I had originally read this wrong and thought they were UN- available.
I probably screwed it up when I pressure washed it(I forgot to mention that)

Well I crawled under her(whoo hoo) and found the electrical connector had gotten some water in it.Blew it out with the compressor and all is GOOD!
went ahead and changed oil ,full lube and I'm going to go play a little this weekend.
