Hey Guys. I need help. I have a 95YJ w/ 2.5L. About 50 miles ago I started hearing an ever so slight "chatter". It has gotten so loud that I am afraid to drive it and would call it a "rapping" in gears 2 thru 5 at this point (may be too suble in 1st gear). It starts at about 1500rpm and does not stop. The noise only stops when I push in the clutch and coast. When I rev in Nuetral or with clutch in.... no noise. Which makes me think its a drivetrain issue. This is when I am in 2WD.

Transmission was rebuilt 2K miles ago, and the clutch was put in at the same time. I checked the rear shaft and the U-joints seems to look okay. There is a small bit of play (when I try to rotate the rear shaft) but everything seems to be moving together (shaft, into the rear diff, and into the T-case)

One thing I did notice while checking things out last night is on the front shaft. when I push up on it, there seems to be about 3/8 to a 1/2 inch of play. Most movement is seen where the larger part of the shaft gets a bit smaller and then goes to the front U-joint. Could this be related to a budget lift job by previous owner??

I am new at this .... so please please help my sick baby. I am begining to think I was taken when I bought this mess.
Thanks

that might be your problem, the shaft that your talking about, is it the drive shaft? if its the drive shaft and its the front take it out and drive it and see if the noise goes away, if it does then that might be your problem, bit to me it sounds like your throw out bearing is rattling, that or the pressure plate fingers.

i have the same noise on my 97 tj 2.5. I have a feeling it might be an exhaust manifold or something like that but haven't been underneath to take a look yet. The noise definately only appears when there is some sort of strain or minimal acceleration usually at a lower RPM. If i give it a little more gas the noise goes away. It seems as if only at a certain vibration/strain level of the engine the noise occurs. I think that is a reasonably adequate explanation. Anyone else experienced this have a bit of a clue? HELP!

I would say throw-out bearing. If it is something isnt right. If the transmission was just rebuilt you would think that a new t-o bearing would have been installed. It only makes sense to replace it since its cheaper than to having to pull a transmission again a few months later if it fails. A new one shouldn't have went bad that fast. Im sure there could be other possibilities though???

Drive it without the front driveshaft to pinpoint it or rule that out.

does it only do it when you step on the gas? there is a fair chance the front shaft needs a rebuild....

to determine a driveshaft problem.. just take out one shaft and drive with the other.. if the problem goes away, you found it
