snap,crackle,pop,rear axle

while entering drivways, goning over dips i hear a noise like a loud crackle from the rear passenger tire/ axle. its a 92 yj so im just guessing i need new springs. but what else could it be?

I'd check the rear differential for spider gear shrapnel. years ago I had a V6 Jeepster and (showing off as a teenager) tore up 3-4 sets of spiders . it would act normal until a turn. I learned to stop beating machinery eventually.
