Slight Over heating while sitting still

I seem to have a new issue with my lil'bit (03 TJ X)

Lately, after sinking her, It seems to over heat after a few minutes. this stops when I get back on the road. There are 2 things I am thinking.

#1. Thermostat is sticking, but, that doesn't explain why it cools so fast once I get to moving again.

#2. Fan clutch is working properly while idling or at all. sitting still and the fan is spinning at adle speed doesn't dissapate enough heat but when moving the wind will cool enough to make the Temp normal.

Question 1: After having the fan run while 1/2 sunk in the water could it have screwed my Fan clutch?

Question 2: Would it be water in the clutch or just the pressure put on the fan for that period of time that would cause it?

Radiator fins full of mud. Get the hose pipe after it.
You can check the fan clutch with a rolled up newspaper. Stick it in the fan and see if it will stop it. If it does then the clutch is out. Just watch your fingers.

BTW... I just noticed that you were fom Atlanta. There is a group of fuys from there that regularly come over and run the trails in Gardendale with us. PM me and I'll tell you how to get up with them.

yup.... radiator fins mightbe clogged... run a hose over it..

I bet the fan clutch is shot. Would be a great time to up grade to an electric fan. tug

Ok checked her out while she was at normal temps. The fan just spins because of the friction. Can't decide wether to upgrade or just let Jeep Fix her. I like my warentee may as well use it.

Also, when I try to wiggle the fan while she is turned off the fan moves a good bit like it isn't attached to anything. can some other TJ owners try that out. leave the engine off and just try to wiggle the fan front to rear and see if you have any play.

it shouldnt move, i would clean the radiator fins and be carefull doing it u dont want to flatten the fins out, if you do then you will deffinatly have a over heating problem...

Did the same thing after sinking mine a few times....problem is the fan clutch is shot (common problem in TJ's the like to swim). A new one should cost about a hundred bucks, but might be time to upgrade to a switchable electric ?

sounds like the fan clutch, when the engine is off, you should be able to turn the fan, but there should be quite a bit of resistance.. PAsmokeater had the same symptoms after dunking his....

Bad Jokes

My clutch fan blew the first time I dunked it. go to the switchable electric fan. Did that to mine and love it.
