Side air bags

I have an 08 X with side air bags in the seats. They are brutal on my back and was wondering if it would be possible to throw in some padding between the cover and the front of the air bag module. I am assuming that the pressure from the air bag is directed towards the back seat and not into the driver when it is deployed (hopefully never). Has anyone done anything like this or have an idea of what I may or may not be up against?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

There is not One good advice in Purposely Blocking an Airbag. A Side air bag is directed towards the B pillar facing away from the side of the seat. it's purpose is to protect you on a side impact. The only Advice i can give you is to get a seat cushion to place on your seat. If you "Purposely " obstruct the air bag and you get in an accident, Your insurance company may hold that against you for your claims.

I know not to put anything in the way of the air bag, especially in the direction in which the air bag would deploy, I meant more in which way the seat faced. I am not a very big person and I figure that if I sent it to a trim shop and had them add padding to the front of the seat, to the side of where the air bag would be deployed, would be all right.

As to the older model thing, I went new because of the engine guarantee, and did not want to inherit someone's problems by going used. Every time I go used I end up sinking a grand or two into it to get it fixed so that it is actually road worthy.

Thank you guys for the responses, I have been in the body shop business since I was 16, I just wanted to know if anyone here had changed their seats beyond adding a cushion to the front, or throwing some subs in the back seat (which I thought was an excellent idea).

Try Brookstone or Sharper Image. they have some good over the seat lumbar cushions.

Mike, I feel for ya' and really don't have anything positive to add......just wanted to rant a bit. Probably should even have posted at all.....but oh well. Side impact air bags in a Wrangler?????? No wonder our "American" car makers are in the shape they're in. Thank you, government regulations!! I love my '03 but I hate my dash......which looks the way it does because of the AIR BAGS!! I've always wondered what genius it was that thought air bags were a good idea for an off road vehicle? Well....it is what it is and there's little we can do about it. I'm glad you bought a Jeep........use it for what they were originally meant for, have fun, and keep comin' back here for advice!!

I thought it was bad when they eliminated the 4banger.............now SIDE airbags?!?!?!?!!?......................................

At least it's not a "car"!!!!!!

Sorry old old-geezer,

Two ways to go here....You can add minimal padding like we do at work.... a memory type foam works best..... or you can shunt the air bag harness and rip out the Air bags in the seats and add all the padding you want. When we add foam to the seats we add Very little or the seams around the air bag don't line up any more and it looks funny. Cutting the memory foam works best with a Electric carving knife. Glue the foam in with 3M contact glue number 77 and let it tack up good before you stick the parts together. Add more foam then you need and trim it down for a smooth look.

If you want to shunt the air bag and remove it let me know I will get you the info on the size and value of the resister needed to bypass that air bag. When pulling the air bag BE CAREFUL it is a class 3 explosive and will take a finger and mash it up a bit..... no Static spark and remove the battery cables off 5 minutes before you start to work on the system.

Yeah they told me at my I-CAR classes that air bags had the same explosive charge as a howitzer, and I have helped blow up some others that were taken out of totals. I sell the 3M glue here at work and will just need to find out where to get the memory foam. Thanks for the ideas man, and yes, if you could get me the size and value for the resisters I may need I would appreciate it. I do not want to take them out, but I may have to.

Rant on man, sometimes that's how we end up "seeing the light" you might say.
