shifter is broken

well it looks like my shifter is broken....has this happened to anybody else?

the shifter broke somewhere around the point of were the shifter hooks up to the shift rail.....i think i need a new trainny..............

take off the boot and see if you can get into your shift tower

What year Jeep?

Pull the boots and remove the shifter by depressing the collar at the base and turning it 1/4 turn to unlatch it. See what's going on in there. You may have to remove the shift tower by removing it's 4 bolts, but that requires removing the transfer case linkage.

Yah, don't give up so quickly. Look under the boot and see what's going on. Also, are you talking about the Transmission shifter or the tcase shifter? I've had my tcase shifter come apart under the floor board. Turned out, that it was just a missing screw. This was on a NP231.

it is a 1987, i will check the collar. anything to save a buck....i really do not want to swap the transmission
