Shaking when taking off from a stop....

Lately I have noticed that when I take off from a stop, my jeep seems to shudder a bit until it hits about 2000 or 3000 rpm. Kinda annoying. Any idea what this could be? It seems to transmit through the transfer case and through the shifter, causing the shifter to jump around a bit.

Check the motor mounts for cracking, and the tranfer case mount and torque mount. The torque mount is next to the transfer case mount and has the single bolt that runs all the way through the skid.

I will do that tommorrow, thanks for the quick response bounty. But, if it isnt one of those, which i hope it is, what else could it be?

Hello lanejac,

I think Bounty__Hunter is, as always, right on target.

My Jeep developed that same S-H-U-D-D-E-R when moving off in first gear, but at no other time. The cause turned out to be a broken driver's side motor mount.

If you prop up the hood so you can watch the motor from the driver's seat as you release the clutch in first gear, you might be able to see the entire motor rotate toward the passenger side (torque reaction) if the motor mount is broken/defective.

A limited amount of engine roll is normal, but in case of my Jeep, the motor rotated much more than could possibly have been reasonable.

There are other possible causes of that start-off shudder, but I think the motor mounts, t-case mount, and torque reaction limiter are, as Bounty mentioned, a good place to start your investigation.

I have a shutter but mine is in 1st or reverse. I am pretty sure it is the clutch. Does your do it in reverse too?

mine does the same in frist and reverse. i think it is the clutch as well. uneven wear is the culprit i think.

i could put a lot of input in on this... but it seems as though everything has already been touched on... i've had many problems with transmission mounts... what you are describing seems to be just that
