Serpentine belt adjustment

on my 2001 xj 4.0l im a little unsure about TIGHTENING the serpentine belt.. do i have to loosen that tensioner pulley bolt to tighten.. or can i just turn the adjustment bolt.. some say loosen the tensioner pulley bolt then tighten.. some say just tighten.. now im confused.. besides that tensioner pulley bolt is on there like a *****hh

Loosen the Bolt that hold the pulley first, then tighten the tensioner bolt then tighten the pulley bolt.
