Select Trac problems

Another query from the UK. I have a 1994 cherokee 4.0 Ltd (77k miles and FJSH) with select trac 4WD. It doesn't look like it's been used off road. It's a great vehicle but the one problem I have is that it is very difficult to get out of part-time 4WD - either into full time or back to 2WD once select trac part-time is engaged. In addition when in part-time mode it grinds and graunches from the underside/front of the vehicle (probably front diff but could also be transfer case) and the transmission sounds pretty rough. Once into full time 4WD (which takes a lot of acceleration/deceleration and seems to be helped if you go over a bump) it is OK but then a pain to get back into 2WD (such that I do not use full time much at all which is bad I know). The transfer case fluid condition and level are fine. Tyres are OK also. Not getting much joy from the mechanics over here so would be very grateful for any information from more experienced folk in the US. With thanks in advance. Matt
