second gear noise

I bought a 78 CJ5 with a cammed out 360 it has the T150 transmission. I paid $5200 for it, the dude told me second gear was out. Well after driving it, he was right it knocks like h-ll when I shift to second. So I've just been shifting from first to third. I've already priced a rebuild and it's gonna be around $700. I'm pulling the transmission out next weekend. But I'm wondering If there is a better transmission I can get to bolt up that will hold up better. This motor is REALLY REALLY STRONG,and am afraid it won't hold up. Any ideas??

I have the same set up. You should change to a 5 speed trany. Idk what trany fits but there was a thread on this topic earlier. I'll see if I can find it.
