Replacing water pump

My water pump decided to start leaking today.I plan on changing it tomorrow.I all ready picked up the new pump.The question I have is in the Haynes book it says I should use some RTV sealant with the gasket.In the past I have always used one or the other not both together.Should I use the RTV sealant with the gasket?

not heavy just a skin coat to help seal it better ,only the rubber ones I dont but cardboard or cork I do

20 degrees outside with wind.2 beers and 4 hours later the new pump is in and working.Also cut some of the shroud off the bottom so I can remove it with out removing the fan.
