Remembering America's brave men and women...

I think we have covered the topic before here during Vetrans Day and everyone got a chance to mention if they are currently serving or have served. But I wanted to start a thread so that jeepers could post names and or pics of any friend of loved one who has given the supreme sacrifice for our freedom.
I also wanted to say thank you and God Bless each and every American family who has suffered great loss.

I am fortunate in that I do not have a close friend or relative who has died in combat so I offer this instead:

This is a letter supposedly written by Abraham Lincoln to a grieving mother who lost sons in the Civil War.

Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,--

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

SFC Mitchell A. Lane - Lompoc, CA
Killed in Afghanistan, July 2003

I never met him personally, but I'm very good friends with his family now. We camp with his dad and brothers at least once a year, usually on Memorial Weekend. He was killed on a mission that he voluntarily went on. The rest of his unit had already rotated back and he was due to leave in a few days. He was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group and it was his second tour in Afghanistan.

...And if any of you save the 4Wheel Parts Magazines that come in the mail his brother made the cover a few years back at the 50th Jeepers Jamboree in Rubicon, driving their dads yellow flatfender.

This memorial day has really hit home for me. My Commander, LTC Daniel Holland was killed in Baghdad on 18 May by an IED. We are still making arrangements for the return of his body and his family has been taken the tragedy well. He prepared them before he left, he was a good man, officer, commander and Soldier. He was out there doing what he felt he had to do, he was a Veterinarian and was trying to help the people of Iraq. God Speed LTC Holland, you will not be forgotten. By the way, he was in country 18 days. Take Care, and I hope we all come home soon.

Charles Smith, USN
Killed in Action by Japanese Kamikaze December 7th, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf aboard the USS Lamson.

The Lamson was towed back to port, repaired, and continued service until the end of the war, standing by during the signing of surrender papers. It was later sunk during atomic bomb testing at the Bikini Atoll, and is now a popular dive spot for recreational divers. The Lamson was also used to search for Amelia Earhardt after her disappearance.

To all the veterans out there, a heart-felt thank you from the Gardner family. The liberties and freedom we have today are because of you and we will never forget that.

The Brown family- mudman and mudwoman- are grateful for every sacrifice made, that we are able to live in freedom- God Bless the USA.

Lost my dad last year (almost to the day)......mudwoman lost her mother this spring. No disrespect intended anywhere (dad was a WWII vet), but that's where the mud's thoughts are.

If you wake up breathin', it's a great day!! God bless everyone.

I hear ya, Mud....lost my dad 3 years, 2 months, and 5 days ago, still hurts like it was yesterday. He was Kansas National Guard and 5th Army Sgt. during Viet Nam....to the day he died, he was mad that he never got to go to Viet Nam and fight.:???: Guess he felt it was his duty to go, and kinda felt like he was letting a lot of troops down by not being sent over. His unit was called up, made all the plans, filled out their wills, and were sitting on the tarmac in a transport plane when their call-up was cancelled. I always wondered what would have happened had he gone...would he have come back or would I have been fatherless for most of my life? I guess God had a better plan for him here, and for that, I am most grateful.

To those who have lost friends and loved ones in combat, and to those who have given their all in combat, I salute you and pray for you.
