Dunno if you guys remember, but I had transmission problems a few weeks ago, was looking to upgrade, blah blah blah... THEN...
I was going to buy a transmission on ebay remanned, one sunday night. I got distracted and didn't get to it. The next morning I was driving to work... that rattle and whining noise was really bad... then, BAM! My rear driveshaft went south. I pulled over, took it out, and drove to work in front wheel peel.
Yes the Ujoint was broken, BUT! I didn't hear a sound from the transmission when I was driving in front wheel drive, I was very confused. I went to get another Ujoint later that day, and I looked at the driveshaft at the tail end... 2 HUGE chuncks were missing and couldn't even hold anther ujoint. So I was very optomistic and thinking that the noise and vibs were coming from the beat up driveshaft.
I went and had another CV shaft made at a local shaft shop, put it in along with another end yoke... THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. Damn. So I brought it to the place that told me that I had a bad transmission in the first place and told them what happened when you take the rear shaft out. They looked at it again and upon further study of the problem... it ends up being the bearings in my rear axle!
So I am very relieved thinking, no, KNOWING that it was going to be cheaper to replace bearings in a D44 than putting in a new transmission. I told them to give me a price since I have virtually no time these days to do anything but work. They said, "anywhere between 500 bucks and 1000 bucks... I respond... um thats too much, cause I had a driveshaft shop rebuild the whole rear for a fixed rate of 250 bucks if I supply the parts.
"oh yeah?" he says... "well if they can do it for that then so can I" DUH... I just made the guy come down 600 bucks in price.
So long story short... i bought myself some Timken bearings from Randy's and they are putting them in tomorrow.
Moral of the story?... I dont know.
