Wasn't quite sure what to title this thread so i mixed all my ideas together lol...

anyways, just figured i'd share my story with everyone, its a good laugh.

first off, i'd like to point out that i upgraded my personal recovery accessory inventory... notice the addition of this handy dandy 4000 pound hand winch: (20 bucks at autozone)

the story:
was out last night driving through the state forest land area near me (pine grove furnace state park, in newville, PA). the stone road was covered in about 8" of snow packed down into about 1" of snow (super slippery) from all the cars driving on it. silly me, pop her out of 4wd on a level section of the trail to kick the @$$-end out a little and have a little fun. much to my dismay, i brought her a little too far off the trail, and the back end started washing down the side of the trail into a 3 foot ditch filled with leaves, snow, mud, ice. (approx time 5pm)

was out with my GF, so after digging myself in pretty far, we decided to walk down the road a ways kuz i saw a bunch of trucks parked at the top of a driveway. on the walk back, we got picked up by a bunch of local rednecks in a ford explorer drivin' around on a little booze cruise through the woods. We tried pullin on the jeep with the exploder and my tow straps but to no avail, he had nothin' to grip on so we both just sat and spun. he drove me back to my townhouse back near campus and we called it a night. (approx time 8pm)

study from 12-1am for my final at 8am... take my final, back to bed till 1030am, and off to autozone. picked up that hand winch you see in the back of my XJ, and back out to the jeep in the woods. hooked up the hand-winch to a telephone pole (which was in a PERFECT spot) and began inching the jeep out of the ditch. once we got her about half way on the road, she still wouldn't grip up enough to pull herself out, so back to the winchin... 3/4 of the way on the road and finally she climbed out of the hole on the side of the road (with the help of a 2x8 under the front drivers tire for grip)

what a day,

Used to carry one of those with me in my Toyota all the time back in the day. Never used it to pull myself out, but on several occasions used it to pull other vehicles out (mainly those who didn't want to shell out the $20 I asked for a tug with a strap). If they didn't want to pay for a quick tug, then I'd take my time with the hand winch (we always called them come-alongs).

Oh, BTW, it's nice to see you've got your priorities in order: study, sleep, finals, sleep, retrieve Jeep.

Yeah those things can be life savers, Harbor Freight has an 8000 # one that goes on sale for like $29 occasionally, its saved my butt a couple of times

nice story... but i'll stick to the hi-lift as a winch.. much safer and easier to use.... and a 7000lb capacity

I, too, used to carry a come-along. I preferred it to the Hi-Lift method. Then again, I really prefer the Warn XD9000 on the Mighty YJ now...

Hmmm... I wonder how the bat in the trunk fits into all of this...

It is a nice bat, though...

that bat is my best friend... about 28" long, weighs next to nothing...

Joe Pesci's best friend is a bat as well. Except for at the end of "Casino"
