rear end roaring

Vent question

My wifes 99 grand cherokee (4.0, 4X4 82k miles) has a pretty loud roaring noise from the back end. It does it at any speed but gets worse the faster you drive and seems worse when you have the gas pressed. It does get quiter though when coasting (in neutral) but still makes noise at any speed.

It sounds as if it is in the driveline somewhere.
If you feel comfortable doing this......

Put the rear axle up on jackstands enough to raise the rear tires about 4 inches off of the garage floor. (do this on level ground only)

Have someone start it and accelorate slowly up to around 35MPG while you are at the back end. It is sometimes easy to find a bad u-joint, rear end noise, axle bearing etc..

Other than that, we could all sit here half of the night and throw out things it could be and you still not know. On something like this, you have to get in there and find the problem.

Sounds like a ring and pinion problem. Grands are notorious for problems with the Aluminum D44 rear axle having issues such as yours, wonder which axle yours has?

Sounds like mine - and I have the chrysler rear... its a common problem - mine has done it for 30k miles and hasn't gotten worse. Yoiu will probably find it lessens when slowing down due to the change in the load.
