Question for those with hardtops...

Its finally cold here in Tampa and I need to put my hard top back on. I remember my Jeep being a lot noisier (over bumps, potholes, RR crossings) when the hardtop was on last spring. Would weather stripping between the top and the jeep help this racquet? Thanks for any inputs.

RE: moderator

i always recommend weather stripping between hard surfaces that are to be removed... it helps keep your finish, keeps weather out, keeps heat in, and reduces noise

RE: New girl in town

Thanks. I also noticed upon a closer inspection, that some of the black paint from the hardhop is a little scratched. Whats the best thing to touch it up with without costing me an arm and a leg? It's a CJ-7 fiberflass top.

Re: RE: Help!! I think she might blow!!!!

If you're not picky, you can just rattle can it.
-BUT-
I have a friend who called these folks and explained to them that he needed touch up for the hardtop and not the body paint, and they matched it for him. Cheap too.

Hi-Ya, MrChubbyHubby,

What follows might be too late to be of use to you; nevertheless, for what it might be worth:

I use foam tape designed for application between a pickup truck and a cargo bed cap. The tape is 1.5 inches wide and 1/8 inch thick. The tape is adhesive-coated on one side, with a paper backing that must be peeled off to expose the adhesive.

My CJ-7 hardtop is suspended from garage roof rafters when not mounted on the Jeep. Before lowering the hardtop down onto the Jeep for the winter, I apply the tape (sticky side up) to the underside of the hardtop mounting flange, then poke holes through the tape for the eight hardtop mounting bolts.

Works for me, but the hardtop is inherently noisy. It seems to act as a sounding board - sorta like living inside of a guitar. The tape will help to suppress the road noise only to a limited extent.

I bought the tape at a Sears hardware heaven store, but the tape should also be available at a pickup truck cap-camper store.

One roll of tape, about $6.00, is long enough to weather-strip a CJ hardtop several times.

Regards,

Gadget

used the same thing on my old 91's hardtop - also works if the seal b/w the windshield and cowl starts to leak - compresses pretty good and doesn't destroy itself too soon if you take it apart (or fold the windshield alot...)

For those that do this, do you weather-strip just the windshield or the entire length of the top's sides, too?

Thanks,

-X

Hee Hee Hee :D ........sorry, couldn't help myself.

Just my opinion, sell the hard top and buy the Bestop Sailcloth Replace a Top. I love the thing year round.
