Project XJ questions

Hi guys i have a an 85 XJ. It seems to run ok but i need to fix a few things on it. So i have 3 Questions. Lights on dash work but speedo, MPH and ODO dont work. Are these all part of a single cable? Also the person that had it before disconnected the 4x4. They from my understanding just disconnected the cable from the lever. is it just a matter of finding the cable and then re attaching via bolt or? there is a cable hanging down underneath i think its the speedo cable..i hope lol. i can upload pics if needed any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the 4x4 lever cable but I know the speedo, odometer, and tripometer are all connected on the same cable, mine is out right now too lol

The speedo and odo are cable driven and connect to the tailshaft of the transfer case. Get down and take a close look, you should be able to see what needs to be done to reattach it. It's possible you are losing atf from the transfer case without the speedo cable in place.

There could be a couple things going on with the 4wd. The floor shifter is mechanical and attached to the transfer case with linkage. If you feel resistance and can feel it shifting, then it's likely attached properly. Then there's the central axle disconnect on the front axle that is vacuum operated by a switch on the transfer case. This system only connects/disconnects the passenger side axleshaft and is also responsible for activating the 4wd light on the dash.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I was re reading what i put, and i noticed i said speedo and MPH;same thing lol. What i meant was speedomodor Odom and Gas gauge. So when i looked at the cable that was hanging down it had a metal head and then plastic on the tip, plastic looked worn like the cable had been dragging. i will take a closer look. The Floor shifter is not attached. it is free moving and i verified by looking underneath. i can see the lever but nothing is attached. what would i be looking for that attaches to this lever?

Ok so i took a few pictuers. In Fig.A im assuming this is the whole that the speedo goes into right? Fig.B this is the plug that i think came out of it. can i just detach the tip? Fig C. this is the transfer case linkage i cant seem to find where it attaches. Fig.D This is an area down from the linkage the silver bolt is just sitting in the slot the wire is holding it in place, any ideas??

The cable does go in that hole but your missing the little piece that holds it in the hole.

The linkage looks like its missing the piece on the transfer case that it would hook too

A: Yes, that's the speedo gear hole, you will also need the hold-down clip and bolt. It's similar to the Y clip that holds the distributor in the engine block.

B: That looks like half a speed sending unit, the cable should unscrew from that. They're plentiful in the junkyards.

C: Directly next to the driveshaft CV joint, you will see a threaded rod with no nut. There should be a flat metal bar attached to this with a 9/16" nut. The flat metal bar will have a hole in the opposite end. There's then a metal rod that attaches to this flat bar and the flat bar you see as part of the shift linkage. Both ends of the metal rod insert into plastic bushings that fit in the flat metal bars.
Here's a pic of the transfer case bar:

This is the body end of the linkage:

D: looks like a bellhousing bolt that needs threaded back into the hole and tightened down.

Ok so i found the linkage bar under the seat. looks like it has the bushing on the end too so all i need is a 9/16 nut? and for the speedo, the end unscrews and then a new end goes on and then i need a clip and bolt as well? End=sensor?
