You would need an adapter unless there's such a thing as a 242c. The 242j has a 6-bolt pattern where it attaches to the transmission and the c (chevy) transfer cases are 5-bolt.
Not all the 700R4s are 5 bolt flange. I have a NP208C with 27 spline input and it's 6 bolt (I was going to use it to bolt to a Jeep 727, but in my search for a 27 spline adapter for the 727, I got a Dodge NP208D (from an '85 Dodge Ramcharger) instead which is RH drop instead of LH drop and it bolted right on.
