Hi, installing my 3" body lift finally. How do you get the steering shaft out? I unbolted the two bolts where the splines are, but how does the shaft get shorter to remove it?
I think it will simply fall out when you are lifting the body. My buddies Ranger worked like that. Be sure to secure the sterring wheel inside so it does not turn when you disconnect it. Trust me, it will cause some problems. Also, mark the shaft .-al
doesn't the lower part of the shaft get shorter by pushing it down? I think that is how we put in the extention that came with the BL.
Sorry I can't help much more.-al
Can't tell you anything about the steering shaft but I want to know how the rest of the lift went. I have a 1" body lift sittin here that I started to install till I busted a body mount bolt up inside the body. Tried drilling it out but that hardened steel doesn't drill easy.
When I installed a 2" BL on my old 91 YJ, the shaft was a pain to get out. You can just let it come out(extend) when the lift occurs with the jacks. Once out you can extend it, remove the first spring (should be 2 in there) and then push it back it and should be fine. When I did my BL on my 95YJ, didnt even remove the shaft just let the lift extend it for me. I have had no problems. Good luck.
Lift went great, all that is lef tis that stupid shaft that WONT extend.
I should have let the jacks extend it, but I already losened it like the paper said to do. Now I am stuck trying to lengthen it. It is frozen. Let me keep trying.
the bottom part of the shaft should extend a bit.maybe i or two inches? Are you trying to extend it or shorten it? Do you have the extention that came with the kit? there should be an extention that you will install to make it fit. Just making sure we are on the same page here.-al
Mine extended in the middle. The rubber grommet you're talking about just slipped off of mine. I had to use PB Blaster, heat, and a friend to help pull on it. I also put it in a vise, and used a slide hammer on the other end. I stomped on it a couple of times too. :x Didn't help, but it made me feel better. I wish I would have left it on instead of taking it off like the directions said.
Sound like the Ranger I worked on. Just keep working on it bryanjeep, and you will get it. You can get a propane torch at Wal Mart for about $12 so you can apply some heat to it.-al
Yeah, this stupid Jeep crap is really pissing me off. Now, lucky me, I get to buy a new freaking shaft. Trust me, I would have used another word, but I am being "family man." Extended to far, went to push it back in, well lets just say, I can't. Yay, I get to waste $115 more dollars on the stupid Jeep. I am really regretting a lot of crap right now, the only thing I like about Jeeps now is there bodies.
Later
Sorry to hear that bryanjeep, check the salvage yared before you go buy it at the stealership. Once you get that part taken care of, you will enjoy the new look! Bet it looks good. Get us some pics once you get this prob. fixed.-al

Hey dude, check this link out before you buy a new one. Might fit your Jeep, and it will be much cheaper.Ask the guy some questions, and see if it is the one for your Jeep.-al
