I rebuilt my 82' in Sept 01. I completly removed it and took it to a shop. I would have loved to do the work my self, but the mobilhome park I live in kinda frowns on automotive work being done in it. (Although I removed the motor, and reinstalled it with new transmission, all under their noses) I don't have the proper tools to hone the cylinders out. So I let a shop do it.
As far as rebuilding it in the vehicle? Well, the head can be pulled, rebuilt, the cam can be removed from the front with the front clip (radiator & grill) removed, the oil pan can get removed, exopsing all the main bearings, and the oil pump. I guess if you drop the transmission & T/C then the clutch can be dealt with. The bellhousing will need to be removed to gain access to the rear seal.
Only issue I can think of is properly cleaning the block, inside & out. Some items may be difficult to get at/to.
I guess if you removed both fenders, you could rebuild it. I'm sure I've left something out, but as I didn't rebuild it in the vehicle, maybe someone else can fill in what I may have missed.
Good luck with the project.......
