Opinions: Soundbar or rear molded boxes

Hello all,

Just looking for opinions on "rear" sound options. I've got a 91 YJ and want to add either a soundbar or some molded speaker boxes behind the front seats. Anyboy have any opinions. Oh and I drive almost exclusively with the top off, except in the "winter" here in SoCal I put the bikini and soft doors on.

Cheers,
Geoff

could try and make your own! i posted these awhile ago - but not many people saw it.

Here was my bar before the fiberglass and primer:

Since then, ive fiberglassed it, bondo'd it, and applied the primer. I tried to take pics of it tonight, but couldnt get my digital camera to work. had to use the webcam. Sorry for poor quality

Im going to have it painted and clear coated. And hopefully by xmas i'll have enough money to fill it with speakers (6)!!!

Go with the molded boxes, it gives a better sound that with the soundbar, the soundbar puts the highs like an inch from your head and I personaly don't like it. Plus if you get a good set of speakers for the boxes you will have more base which would compliment the highs of the 4X6's in the dash quite nicely. Evan

I bought some pre fab speaker boxes from walmart for about 12 bucks each. They have gray carpeting on them and are the perfect size to sit on the wheel well. Some discount 6x9"s (also from walmart) dropped right in and the setup works pretty well. Much cheaper than a sound bar.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE 6 SPEAKER SOUNDBAR FROM OMIX (MUD AND SHINE). I have gone through 5 soundbars and was disgusted with all of them and sent them back right away. When I got the Omix, I was shocked. It is awesome. I do not recommend the behind seat boxes. They don't have wuality sound and rattle even with them bolted in. Get the soundbar, worth the cash!!!

Both!
I have both, factory YJ sound bar, and Thor sound wedges. I re-fiberglassed the enclosures to hold a set of 6 1/2 compnents with 1 inch tweeters. Sound is killer!

Dave, When did you get so crafty??? You built that sound bar but I needed to put in your deck?? hehe

Personally, I like to listen to my Jeep creak, squeak, and pop (rice krispies?), but if you choose to drown out road noise and falling parts, I'd go with a sound bar.

But you have a 91... so your roll bar is slanted in the back and a rollbar mount would mean that they are directly on top of the driver and passenger's head. Too much. So I would say you're defaulted to the wedges. Or go with Chinard's idea. I'd just get some louder 4x6's for the stock location and punch them with an amp.

You kids and your music... sheesh.

I keep hearing peopole say having the bar right above your head is a problem, NO not at all. This is better being that you don't have to turn up the volume loud at all to be able to hear it. (this is a good thing). Stick with the soundbar, you won't be let down.

Try to find yourself some of the 2003 "sound bar" Sets. the 2003 is not actually a bar they are 2 Plastic pieces that go in the corners of your Roll bar and have a dome light with them. :-D

chat anyone?

Well, I just ordered my 6 speaker soundbar. I was just wondering about the install for my 99 SE. I am going to assume that because I have an aftermarket radio, I can just plug in the speaker wires into the rear left and right speaker plugs on the back of the radio? The stock wires under the dash are useless to me (besides the light), correct?

-Rob

Yes, you are correct, just don't use the stock wires. My 6 speaker s/b was easy to install. Comes with the wires and plug. It is self explanatory once you look at it.
