Oil pan gasket R & R question/ opinions wanted

My 90 XJ , 4.0 with 155k and running fine has the oil pan leaking, not bad but I looked up the labor guide and it only calls for 3.1 hrs. First, it looks like a straight up R&R, it does not appear that the motor will need jacked up for clearance. Is that right? Second, should I replace the oil pump if I take the pan off? Part of me says yes, it has 155K on it and it wouldn't hurt. The other part of me says, leave it alone and don't mess with it, just clean the screen if needed and put it back together. BTW, the oil pressure is fine, around 45-50 with rpm and 30-30 at idle. Please chime in.

The last time I replaced the pan gasket. I did it without unbolting the motor mounts. I loosened everything on the front end, so the front diff/axle could drop as low as possible and then jacket the front axle down with a screw jack, to get as much clearance as possible. Pan came out like a chinese puzzle, really a pain and putting the pan back in, without slipping the gasket or smearing the sealer was a real job.
The next time I do it, I´m gonna loosen the motor mounts, jack the motor as high as possible and shim it with wood blocks.
Somebody mentioned in a thread last summer, about removing the transfer mounting bolts and jacking the transmission up for clearance. Never tried it, but seems like it might be easier than the motor mounts. Where I was lacking in clearance, was at the front of the pan and the oil pump pick-up. Don´t really know if raising the transmission will help much.
Most times low oil pressure comes from main (crankshaft) bearing wear. A new oil pump may help some, but rarley cures the problem. The FSM gives the allowable clearance (measured with a feeler gauge), to determine the wear at the pump. Haven´t had an oil pump off for a long time, but I do remeber it being a real pain, for some reason that escapes me right now.
Before you start, check the oil filter mount and see if mount isn´t leaking down onto the pan lip. The front crank seal will also leak onto the pan lip and looks like a leaky pan gasket. Oil leaking out of the bell housing, is usually the rear main bearing seal and not the pan gasket.

Hi,
I just changed a rear oil seal on my 90 XJ last week and had to take the oil pan out. Until I unbolted the motor mount and jacked up the engine, I couldn't get it to clear the axle. I also jacked up the transmission by the crossmember. Once these two places were lifted, it came out pretty easy. It can get stuck on the oil pump on the way out, but it wasn't too bad. It was a snap going back in. I used a spray adhesive to stick the gasket to the oil pan. Apparently there is a one piece gasket that can make things easier. I'm ure there are other ways to do this, but this was pretty easy albeit oily and messy.

Thanks guys, that info is awesome.
Mudder, I will check the oil filter mount, the leak I have seems to pool up around the back of the pan on the lip and drip down the back of the pan. The bell housing and flywheel area are dry and clean so I do not suspect a rear main at all. I really need to hit the car wash and clean it all off and run the weekend and get a better idea of what is leaking and where.
Thanks!!
