Noises

I am having a tough time diagnosing this sound that is coming from underneath my 93 XJ. Its a metal sounding clinking noise that comes and goes. When I first start driving, it is really bad, and loud, but the weird thing is, is after driving around for a while it stops or is much more infrequent. Rough rocky roads and pot holes induce the sound as well. When in neutral and I hit the gas, there is no sound, it only comes when the car is moving.

It sounds like it could be coming from the rear differential, or possibly the torque converter...:???: Any ideas or suggestions, about what the sound could be, or what I should do to address the issue.

thanks. nick

Does it sound more like a rattle, and when does it sound the loudest

yea, a metallic rattle. kinda like shaking a bunch of nuts and bolts around in a metal tray of some kind, but it is rhythmatic. It is the loudest during the first few minutes of driving when I am in gear and accelerating.

I really dont think I should drive it.

it sounds like the same problem i had, and it came for my converter, the inner stuff was lose and just ratting around

So I finally figured it. Dang u joints hitting a bent outta shape muffler. Must have knocked it loose lat time I was on the trail. Easy fix.
