Newbie needs quick help! When starting a machine gun sound

I have an 89 Jeep Wrangler that won't turn over. It was running up until a couple of days ago, but now when I try to turn the ignition it just makes a machine gun type sound and won't turn over.

Can anyone advise me on what is wrong. I'm sure it's something very basic, but I'm no expert mechanic.

I also have an 89 wrangler and I think I've had the same problem you're describing. Here's what happened to me.... the bolt that holds the starter to the engine broke off in the block and the other bolt was so loose it was about to fall off. So the teeth weren't lined up to start the engine. I've actually had this happen more than once.

So get under there and check that your starter is securely in place. It may look like it, but grab it and see if it moves. My bolts like to back out every so often.

sounds like a bad starter solenoid... this is the part of the starter that pushes the gear into the flywheel... when they go, it won't fully engage....

I suggest tapping on the Starter with a hammer "LIGHTLY" then try to start it again.

First thing I'd do is clean the battery terminals and check the battery cables. 8)

The "machine gun sound" is your starter. First you need to check if your battery has any juice. If it does, it is most likely a bad starter silenoid. Once you determine that your starter is bad, disconnect your battery. Go under your Jeep (passengers side ),and locate your starter. You will need to remove two bolts and the cables so you can remove the starter. Take the old starter to a parts store and have them check it. When I replaced mine, it seemed to work (it would turn when it was tested), but the gear would kick forward and lock when installed, so it was bad. I suggest doing it yourself because it is so easy. Shops charge a ridiculouis amount to do this simple task. If you need any help, PM me and I will take you step by step with a lot more details. -Al

BTW, if your battery is not fully charged, have it checked at a parts store. Do not keep turning the engine because you may fry wires.
