NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York firefighters have been forced to strip their lockers American flags, stickers expressing support for U.S. troops in Iraq and cards commemorating firefighters who died in the September 11, attacks, the firefighters' union said on Wednesday.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association threatened to sue the New York Fire Department, claiming it violated the free speech rights of New York's 8,800 firefighters and 2,500 fire officers. The action comes under an old policy more strictly enforced since early last month.

A fire department spokesman said flags and commemorative cards were allowed but offensive material was not.

"Over the past 18 months, the New York City Fire Department has made a concerted effort to eliminate offensive material from firehouses," said spokesman Anthony Sclafani. "However, American flags and mass cards of firefighters killed on September 11, 2001, are certainly permitted."

The union said it would distribute 10,000 American flag stickers on Thursday to firefighters to stick on their lockers in protest.

"They are proposing that these people who save lives on a daily basis can't be trusted to maintain their locker," said Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy, who demanded the policy be changed or said the union would sue the department on January 21.

The fire department has enforced the policy more strictly since early last month when a slogan considered degrading to women was found in a Brooklyn firehouse, a department source said.

Cassidy said such items as American flags and stickers supporting U.S. troops helped maintain morale. Some 343 firefighters died in the September 11 attacks on New York.

"Firefighters by and large are patriotic Americans; they care about the country and they care about the city of New York," he said. "We consider ourselves a second family to Americans

Hasn't the New York Fire Department got better things to do with their time?

All because one slogan, offensive to women, was found in Brooklyn.

Boy oh boy the word offensive carries some serious weight these days, doesn't it?

BTW, TC, you just offended me with your last post.

What's the big deal? They can still have their flags and commemorative pictures up. All they have to remove is the derrogatory stickers and pictures. I'm sure the firehouses policy is no more strict then our policy of the kinds of pictures we can post or what we can write in our signatures here is.

I'm offended that they were offended so now thay have to put the flags back up. Right?

what they are upset about is that the department found one locker with one questionable item and then went through the entire department and scraped off every American Flag, FAmily picture, 911 Momento, everthing. They over-reacted

Thats how it always is. You want to talk about hard charging harassment from an employer, you should see my department. We had 2 guys messing around in the squad room one night with a pocket knife and one accidently stuck the other guy in his leg. Well we were all told we could not longer carry a pocket knife on our duty belts. trying to argue to get it back, the PD says, it could be taken away from us and used as a weapon. Sorry, but if thats the case so could our baton, OC spray, and gun but we can carry those. Also We lose leave time for not wearing our hats outside. God forbid we step out of our cars without our hats on and someone complains or a supervisor sees it. It all boils down to law suits. These agencies are scared of being sued and they go to extremes to try to prevent it. As for being offended, its funny how if someone says something, as the cosntitution says they can, and another person is offended, who's rights take presedence? Because no matter who we say is wrong, we violate the other persons rights.

Sorry for the rant. I know what those guys are going through and completely understand the frustrationg B.S. they are dealing with.

Actually, any right given by the Constitution is a right of protection from the government. The fact that the Constitution says, in so many words, "A person can say what they want." only protects them from being harrassed by government or law enforcement for doing so. However, it does NOT give any person any fraction of a right to say something that will clearly offend another person. The Constitution was molded and formed from CommonLaw. The basic CommonLaw principle follows the "do unto others..." ideology. So, the offended person is the one with the stronger case in the situation you brought up.

yeah, but.... one person finds offense in a photo, joke, statement, but no one else does, should the one person have a stonrger case then? I don't think so. Look at the envuironmental groups that want to get rid of ORV parks and want to ban off roading. They take offense to our sport/ recreation, all because of a bad few. But there are groups out there who don't believe any vehicle should be in the woods, mountains, etc for any reason. i don't think they should be allowed to have a majority say.
