I'll probably wear everybody out with question as I learn more about what I'm doing but for now I really need to find out about the automatic transmission that is in my 74 DJ5. I purchased an old mail jeep and it runs and drives great it just has some leaks from some of the seals (out put seal mostly) so I need to find out how to tell what type and model the transmission is. I'm told that being as it's an AMC jeep that it has a chrysler torque flight transmission. If any one can tell me where to find the info on it so I can order the right parts I would sure be greatful for that knowlege. Like I said I'm new to the jeep thing but I already like it. Thanks again, Joe 8)8)8)

Well, I'm learning fast. Thank God for knowlegeable parts guys. I found out that these beauties mostly come with a TH 400. But, they can also have the old 727 or 904 torque flight in them also. And true to form mine doesn't have any of these. Mine has a powerglide in it. This (I hope) seems to be a blessing of sorts. The parts for it seem to be readyly available. At least so far. The way you tell what type it is you have to check out the fluid sump for the transmission and the shape of the gasket should tell you what you need. Like I said, thank God for good parts guys.

Welcome to the Z. Sorry there were no answers to your question, could be due in part because there aren't many DJ's around these parts.

Yea, I knew goin' in that this was gonna be a rare bird. I'll have more questions as time goes on that should be a little closer to norm. Like what ,if any, kits are available for converting my drum brakes to disc. where to find parts for them etc. Thanks for the welcome, Joe

Are you sure it's a powerglide (2 speed auto) and not Borg Warner? Which motor does it have? (Iron Duke GM 4 cyls came with PG as an option) If it's an AMC 6 cyl, and the starter is on the left (what would be considered driver's side in most American vehicles EXCEPT postal rigs) then it's BW auto, which is related to the Ford FMX. (I have one of those trans that was rebuilt and it cost the guy almost $1,000 to have it done! My son pulled it to put a different drivetrain in and he has it for sale for $200)
For disc conversion, I would score a complete CJ axle to swap in (open knuckle works better) if you plan to make it 4x4. If not, look into Ford 1/2 ton pickup or van front brakes and calipers.

It is an inline 6 but the starter is on the right side (postal jeep so it's driver side). It does have what appears to be a ford starter though. The pan gasket looks to be a power glide but I thought it was a three speed auto. I'll do a second take on that and see. I really appreciate the info. Might wind up saving me some extra work. Mine seems to work fine it just has a few leaks I'm not happy with. I'm gonna keep it 2wd so I'll be looking at the Ford pickup rotors and calipers. what are the chances that the rears would work as well? Thanks again, Joe. Carnuck you are a life saver. After I got your post here I reserched my transmission situation a little closer and found that sure enough it's a ford fmx transmission. I owe ya man, that call was right on and saved me a lot of down time, thanks again, Joe

It's related to the FMX, but not exactly the same. It'll have the same filter kit and internals as a Rambler or other AMC V8 prior to '72. The motor is a later 6 (starter on the right) 232 or 258 which has the same bolt pattern as the AMC V8. (a lot of those were retrofit when the early 6 cyls dropped out and none were available)

That's exactly what I've got. Saved me some time on ordering the kit. Getting the right one the first time means I don't have to reorder and wait for it to show up. Nobody has the kit for this model transmission in stock. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that info. If I wind up needeing that transmission of your sons I'll keep that in mind also. Although it would probably cost more to ship it than to buy it. Coast to coast is a long way to ship :(.

Hey carnuck, you were right again. The pan gasket is a perfect fit but the screen is different. I finally broke down and went to a transmission shop I have done biz with in the past and he had a listing on it and it was in the rv section of his book. At least now I have a rear seal that fits so that should take care of the leaks. Thanks again man, Joe

your dj5 is it a 4cyl iron duke eng if so prob a 904

if its a 232 or 258 6 cyl prob 727 or

a t400 would also work with the 6cyl

My '79 DJ5-G has a 4 cyl, but it's an Audi 2.0L (also used in Gremlins and same vintage Porsche 924, even with turbo!) It has a 904 auto and when I bought it I was going to convert it to a Jetta diesel, but my wife hates it (I got a Jeep Honcho shortbox stepside to replace it) I'm about to post it for sale for $300 (in Seattle) but it needs some work still before it can be driven (I got a new master cyl to put in)
