New to me, Cherokee

I've owned Jeep's since '94, but they've always been CJ's or Wrangler's. I'm looking at a mid-nineties Grand Cherokee, I know it's got an inline six but I don't know about the transmission or the x-case. Were they all pretty much like the wrangler x-cases or did they have crazy thing's like auto 4 wheel drive/full time 4 wheel and stuff like that? I prefer the plain old 2h-4h-n-4l kind of system. I'm going to get it in a few days and drive it for a while before I buy it.

Well im still new to Jeeps but here's about what I know man.
The early Grands had a 4x4 system called "Command trac", it offered a part time 4 wheel drive, command trac was discontinued in 96. Then came the "selec-trac" system which offered full and part time 4 wheel drive. Finally there's the "quadra-trac" system which would give you permanent 4 wheel drive.
The transmissions were either an AW4, the AX15 5 speed or several other 4 speed automatics.
And I think the transfer case was an np242 but I could be wrong about that, not quite sure. Anyway, hope it helps man.

it will probably be all wheel drive or full time 4x4. if so, it will have a viscous center diff that goes out easily. i swapped a transfer case from a wrangler into mine because i wanted to be able to put it into two wheel drive. i had a 93 grand cherokee

I still don't know what year it is, but it's got select trac. It starts at 2h then 4h partime(you have to shift to park then back into gear before itlocks in), 4h fulltime(will go into gear while moving), n, and 4L. It's got some electrical issue's, runs pretty good though and it definately need's some tires. Still don't know if I'll get it or not.

That would be a 242 t-case. Not as strong as the 231 or as many aftermarket goodies but a fairly tough case none the less. IMO the best case they put in the Grands. My old one had a 249 (4hi and 4lo only) and I swapped it for that case and worked great.
