if i were going to put new tires on my 96 grand cherokee, what is the biggest that i could get away with on the stock 15" wheels without having to worry about rubbing in the wheelwells and everything?

225/75R15 is as big as you can go. A set of coil spacers (cheap) would allow 30"x9.5" tires.

30x9.5" fits fine.. i run them on my GC. only time i rub is when the tire is fully stuffed and fully turned... great on the highway and the trail, no other mods necessary

believe it or not, they come factory with 235/75/15 and 30x9.5 fits fine without spacers...with the spacers, you can run 31's

I currently am running 30x9.5 R15 Kuhmo Venture MT's on my wifes GC and I get no rubbing what so ever. I have had it at full flex from lock to lock and no rub. I would recommend you check out the specs on the tires you choose on tirerack.com just to see how big the actual tire is. I think my Kuhmos are an actual 29.8 inch tire.
