New Leak!!!!

I seam to have a slight leak that runs down the front of the Transmission, just behind the Oil pan. Not enough to drip really. It has dripped and created a quarter sized spot only once that I am aware of, after a long day of driving. Is this a normal Leak or should I take it to the Techs to fix? Maybe I over filled the Transmission when swithing to Synchromesh.

:: Edit ::

The color is a dark grey and it comes off the plate that covers the flywheel.

Sounds like brake fluid, check the clutch master cylinder see if it's up all the way.

Which synthetic did you put in the transmission? What color was it?

I got a pretty bad drip starting under my 4.0 today. It looks as if it's between the engine and trans... it IS oil though. It appears to be coming from between a metal plate-looking thing and the begining of the transmission housing. Anyone have any guesses (main seal)??? If so how expensive is this looking. Im sure it wont be pretty. Throughout the day she dripped a spot about the size of a softball... added some Lucas oil thickener stuff...... advice ???
thanks . jered

Sounds like your rear main seal. Make sure the CCV or PCV system is working correctly and your not building any pressure inside the crankcase.

How many miles you have on that motor?

I had a leak like these once, and I thought it was the rear main seal. It turned out to be a busted valve cover gasket. It would leak down the back of the engine and make me think it was the rear main seal. The valve cover gasket is cheap. I would replace it first. If it continues to leak, then I'd start to suspect the rear main. This is only if it's motor oil.

If it looks like brake fluid <clear-ish, grey> then it might be your clutch slave cylinder. I know that on early YJs the slave is inside the bellhousing, but outside on late YJs and all TJs.

Finally, if you can't track it down, watch all your fluids to see where you're losing it. Of course you'd have to lose a significant amount to see this.

Oh! Well then yeah, I'd make them track it down. Geez, boy. You gotta tell us these things! I got 160k on my 2.5L and mine leaks like a woman on a 12 hour road trip. But that's expected. 13k miles... that's practically brand new!

Not after what all I have done to it ;) They have already made the comment about the mud filled Engine compartment.

Hey, they market the hell out of the "off road" factor to sell jeeps, so if you bring one in that's muddy, well screw em!

Good Call wm69! When have you ever seen a jeep commercial portraying on-road manners, soundproof doors, or a sophisticated 28-speaker sound system? The last time I checked "go anywhere" was jeep's theme of the century...
